Map highlights UK hyperlocal blogs

I stumbled on this rather useful heatmap of hyperlocal news sites today.

hyperlocalheat

It’s been put together by Rob Powell, who also runs the hyperlocal greenwich.co.uk, and takes a feed from Openly Local (unfortunately for Leeds the feed is a tad outdated and features a couple of moribund blogs – but it’s still well worth a look.)

The map follows hot on the heels of the publication of the publication last month of a new report into the hyperlocal sector: UK Hyperlocal Community News report. The report consists of research by three UK universities on the UK hyperlocal scene and it was good to see my passion of council reporting gets a notable mention:

“…Around 80 per cent of respondents say they have covered council meetings and decisions, and a similar proportion more specifically mentioned planning decisions or disputes. Nearly two thirds said they had covered local election or local election candidates..”

It’s good to see council coverage so high up in this sector’s priorities as mainstream media’s coverage generally reduces.
